Hello, I’m Kumhee.
Welcome to my blog!

Originally hailing from North Korea, I now call the Sunshine Coast of Australia my home. I am eager to share my unique experiences from my journey through North Korea, China, South Korea, and, of course, Australia!

At the age of 14, the year of 1997, I embarked on a life-changing journey with my family, escaping North Korea and traversing through China, Myanmar, and Thailand over four years.

In 2001, we were finally able to call Seoul, South Korea our new home. I took the GED, graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies with a major in Chinese and a minor in Cultural Contents. I then joined an engineering company, working in the planning division and focusing on outsourcing contracts.

In 2012, I married a gentle and kind-hearted South Korean man. In 2016, I became a mom.

In 2016, after 15 fulfilling years in Seoul and just two months after my daughter was born, our family of three relocated to Australia, where my older sister Kumyoung and her family were living. You can learn more about her story on her YouTube channel, “Aoji Sister (아오지언니).” Since then, my oldest sister Kumwha and younger brother Kumchun also moved to Australia since then.

Currently, I work alongside my sister at her sushi restaurant and am preparing to open my own restaurant in August 2023. To read more about my story, check out this article (In Englsih) by SBS Australia.
You can also watch the video accompanying the article here, and read or listen to the Korean version here.
